NEUROMAS

A neuroma, a painful condition often affecting the ball of the foot between the third and fourth toes, is characterized by thickened tissue around a nerve, causing sharp pain, tingling, or numbness. At LuxStep Concierge, we offer conservative management options such as padding, orthotics, footwear modifications, activity changes, and injections, and if necessary, advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques like radiofrequency ablation and neuroma excision to treat the condition effectively.

Understanding Neuromas

A neuroma, often referred to as a "pinched nerve" or nerve tumor, is a painful condition that affects the ball of your foot, most commonly occurring between the third and fourth toes. This condition is characterized by the thickening of the tissue surrounding one of the nerves leading to the toes. As a result of this thickening, the nerve becomes compressed or irritated, leading to sharp, burning pain, tingling sensations, or numbness in the affected area. The discomfort can be persistent and may worsen with activities such as walking, running, or wearing tight or high-heeled shoes. In addition to these symptoms, individuals with a neuroma may also experience swelling between the toes and a feeling as if there is a small pebble or foreign object inside the ball of their foot. This condition can significantly impact daily activities and overall quality of life, making proper diagnosis and treatment essential for relief and recovery.

Conservative Management

At LuxStep Concierge, we believe in starting with the least invasive treatments for managing neuromas. Our conservative management options include using padding and taping techniques to support the metatarsal arch and relieve pressure on the nerve. We also provide custom orthotic devices to correct foot mechanics and reduce nerve irritation. Footwear modifications, such as recommending shoes with a wider toe box and proper support, help alleviate pressure on the affected area. Additionally, we advise on activity modifications, suggesting changes to activities that exacerbate symptoms, like reducing high-impact exercises. For more direct intervention, we administer corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and pain, and offer alcohol sclerosing injections, which involve a series of alcohol injections to harden the nerve tissue, thereby alleviating pain over time.

Surgical Management

When conservative treatments fail to provide sufficient relief for neuromas, surgical options may be considered. At LuxStep Concierge, we offer advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat neuromas effectively. One such technique is radiofrequency ablation, a procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to generate heat and destroy the affected nerve tissue, thereby reducing pain. During this procedure, a small probe is inserted into the area of the neuroma, and radiofrequency energy is used to ablate the nerve, providing long-term pain relief. This minimally invasive procedure involves a short recovery time and has a high success rate in reducing neuroma pain. In cases where other treatments are ineffective, surgical excision of the neuroma may be necessary, which involves the removal of the enlarged nerve. An incision is made either on the top or bottom of the foot, and the neuroma is carefully excised, followed by the repair of surrounding tissues. This procedure can provide definitive relief from pain and other symptoms associated with neuromas.
